5 Different Ways to get rid of hiccups‏

Have you had that irritating hiccup that just refuses to go away no matter what you do? Yes, I know the feeling.. Its oh so annoying and embarrasing if you happen to start your hiccup fit right in the middle of a conversation with someone you are trying to impress (that beautiful girl ou are hitting on, or the future-boss of your's.. you get what I mean..)

Hiccups are caused by a irritated diaphragam. Some of the simple means for getting rid of hiccups is either by increasing carbon dioxide in the blood or by stimulating the vagus nerve that runs from stomach to brain. In both cases the body becomes concerned with an overriding condition and abandons the hiccups to tend to the more immediate matter, whether that’s clearing excess carbon dioxide from the blood, or paying attention to the over-stimulated vagus nerve.

Anyway, as my topic propose, I'm suggesting Five different ways of getting rid of irritating hiccups!!

Exhale as much as you can then stop breathing for 10 seconds
My first and most favourite way of getting rid of hiccups is this. It helps increase carbon dioxide level in your blood. You just have to breath out and then stop breathing for as long as you can and the hiccup goes away! You can do it anytime you want. Be it in the middle of a meeting or even while you're walking! Its the easiest and most convenient way! No sugar or water needed!!

Stick your tongue out and pull it
Another simple method I should say, although, it is slightly obscene. =P which stimulates the vagus nerve.

Drink a glass of water
Yes, probably the most common method you've ever heard of. Drinking water helps stimulate the vagus nerve.

Eat a spoonful of sugar
Put a spoonful of sugar at the rear end of your tongue and enjoy it. Probably the most fattening method I can think of.. o.O

Breath into a paper bag
Only for hyperventilation you say? Well, it does work for some people! Notice when I say PAPER bag. Please do not use PLASTIC bags. =D

There are, of course many other methods such as getting someone to scare you or the sort. There are even medications for hiccups (eg: sandalwood, cypress and tarragon essential oil). But to my opinion, these are the 5 simplest methods.

Do take note though, if you hiccup lasts longer than 3 hours, or if you observe severe abdominal pain, do seek medical attention.
