Difference between Lecturing and Being Lectured

So I have been asked recently on how I am doing with the part time lecturing I took up. For those of you who don't know, yes, I took up part time lecturing. I was given the opportunity and thought I'd might as well give it a try since I was thinking of being a lecturer as a career.

Oh well, back to my topic, while I was a student, one of the longest presentation that I have done lasted me for 20 minutes. And yes, you guessed it, it was my final year project presentation, and after that, my Masters dissertation presentation. All these while, I have always worked hard on squeezing every little information that I deemed important in a period of 20 minutes. In fact, I believe that I am so good at it that I have almost no trouble at all in always finishing my presentations in any amount of time given to me. That is, until I started lecturing.

My lecturing classes usually last about 2 hours. The terrible thing is, I realised I cannot go on and on about the same thing for 2 hours. You might say just continue with the next topic instead of dwelling on the same topic right? Well, there is this other problem. Our lectures are scheduled, I am suppose to follow the timetable for each session or otherwise I would end up not being able to finish the syllabus in time or end up finishing the syllabus too early. The good thing is, as a student, I'd love if the lecturer could teach fast enough, give more time for study week before the final and at the same time teach effectively. The problem with me is, I am not sure if I am teaching effectively fast or am I just teaching too fast!!

So what I deem to understand about the difference between lecturing and being lectured is:
When lecturing, you try your best to present the least information in the longest time possible whilst as the one being lectured, you try your best to squeeze every little thing you want to say in the required time during an assignment presentation.

A big flip towards the goals huh? @.@

Management Apprenticeship Programme

This is one of Sime Darby’s CSR programmes to support our Government’s mission in reducing the unemployment rates amongst graduates by providing them with relevant training courses and on-job-training exposures. Upon completion of this programme, they will have higher chances in getting jobs as they would have acquired relevant commercially useful skills that most employers want in candidates.

It is a 12-month training programme specially designed for graduates who have not been employed. Throughout this 1 year, the apprentices will undergo a 1-month classroom training starting early July 2010, followed by the 11-month On-Job-Training at the respective divisions within Sime Darby Group.

We will be having a 2-day Walk-In Interviews on Tuesday (18 May 2010) & Wednesday (19 May 2010) for the said programme. Moreover, advertisement will be published in The New Straits Times (Friday, 14 May 2010), as well as Berita Harian and Borneo Post (Saturday,15 May 2010). You may also click here for further information.

You may also leave a comment here to ask me anything you'd like.. I'll do my best as a senior MAP to answer your questions.. =D

Unlucky Day

I am not sure how many of you know what a HPLC is, but last week was one of the most "omg, not this!" situation I faced.

To let you understand my situation, lets start with a brief introduction:

My senior discussed with me and we decided to rerun ALL the samples that we have collected so far using HPLC. I then checked for available slots and realised that the only slot available was after 4pm on Friday. I began weighing all samples on Wednesday, and because the number of samples were so huge! I ended up preparing them the whole day!

On Thursday, I prepared a total of 6 L of mobile phase which I should tell you, required quite an amount of energy (not that I'm complaining). The problem was on Friday, I took the whole day dissolving my samples, and when I'm finally done and prepared to run HPLC, it was nearly time to rush to church (last week was Good Friday you see). I wait patiently as I watched the HPLC run and to my biggest dismay, after running about 10 minutes or so, the damn thing suddenly had an alert beep with the screen displaying "Lamp Failure"!! o.O

OMG!! I tried restarting, I tried rerun, it all didn't work. I had no choice but to call my sister up, told her not to wait for me and head to church first while I rushed to clean and stop the HPLC.

At the end, I was totally exhausted (because I fast for Good Friday, rushed to start and then STOP the HPLC, and ran like mad to get into the car to rushed to church). As if this is not enough, the bloody road was packed jam! The cars barely moved!! WTF? And so, you guessed it, I was late to church as well. What a day man, what a day. (T___T)

p/s: I hate HPLC!!! Grrrr..

Another Industrial Training Farewell

From left, Sirn Sirn, Hong Leong, David, Shwu Fen, Yana, KC and me..

They say people come and go in your life, guess its really true.. I've been experiencing people walking in and out of my life for some time now.. And I thought I was getting used to it until, recently, these people finished their industrial training..

To be exact, they finished their training last Thursday.. As usual, we had a nice meal outside, and we took photos after that.. Honestly, when I left office that day, I thought, well.. That's that.. wonder will I ever meet them again..

On Monday, however, as I walked into PBT lab to start my freeze dryer, the whole place looked so empty and dead.. I felt like something was missing.. I dismissed that thought, turned on the freeze dryer and went downstairs to AC lab to check on my HPLC..

When I tagged myself into the lab, before opening the door, I half assumed that I would be greeted by the usual "hi", by David and "Morning", by Hong Leong.. Again, I dismissed that thought because I knew they were gone.. Yet, when I opened the door, to find the lab empty, again, I felt something was missing..

The next day, as I took out my samples from the freeze dryer, I knew that KC wouldn't be here to help me and chat with me through my task any more.. I knew that Sirn Sirn won't be there to offer a helping hand when I wash up the freeze dryer any more..

During lunch, I realise that I won't be able to chat with Yana any more.. I won't be able to tease her with KC any more and also not be able to tease her about her black stocking with her white shoes..

I miss you guys.. The help you've given me, the times you've listen to me nag about my problems, the times you made me feel like I could keep coming to work because I have friends there.. The laughs we had, the plans we had, the conversation we had, the "tea breaks" we had and so many more memorable things!!

In reality, the newer industrial trainees are also very helpful and nice to me.. But when you guys left, it made the place less than it used to be.. Guess that's life.. My conclusion? Appreciate everyone that comes into your life.. ^^

p/s: asma', steven and adam, if you read this, I missed you guys too.. so don't jealous yea?? =P

PIPOC 2009

Attended a conference and later an exhibition held by Palm Oil International Palm Oil Congress (PIPOC) today.. And after that had lunch at Burger King.. I really didn't know Burger King actually tasted that good!! haha.. Previously only tried the fish burger as well as the chicken burger.. Today I tried Wooper burger (beef) and finally understood why my brother loved Burger King so much!! LOL.. its great!! but those that can't eat beef, I suggest you not to go there.. XD

A picture of my visitors pass.. See that red string at the left side of it.. its a souvenir from caryn all the way from hong kong.. haha..my name is written on a rice within that glass thingy there.. and right below the tag is my newly bought handbag!!! hehe.. first handbag I bought after I started MAP programme.. Love it so much so I decided to promote it here!!

A picture taken while the conference was going on.. I just realised that a number of people are bold from this picture.. Guess scientist work can be quite stressful huh?? =P
